DON HUDSON

Detroit Street Photographer & Documentary Artist

1950–Present | A central figure in the Michigan photographic community for over 40 years, he is known for a "lifetime engagement" with the camera’s ability to describe the appearance of truth. From his early roots at the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts to his internationally published monographs, his work captures the profound and the ordinary with a distinctive, enduring gaze.

Biography

Born in Detroit, he began his formal journey in 1972 at the College for Creative Studies (then the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts). During these formative years, he honed his technical skills and began a lifelong association with a community of "like-minded souls" dedicated to the medium. This period established his personal relationship with the camera—a commitment that has spanned four decades of navigating the "peaks and valleys" of the photographic experience.

For Don, the "game of photography" has been a continuous exploration of how a single frame can encapsulate a larger reality. His work is a testament to the patient observation of his surroundings, building a visual archive that bridges the gap between the 20th and 21st centuries.

Published Works & International Reach

His archival work has recently gained significant international attention through two major publications:

  • From The Archives (France): A curated collection of his photographs from the last century.

  • Can I Get a Witness (Eyeshot, 2024): Edited by Marco Savarese with an introduction by Lucrezia Bonarota and Bill Shapiro.
