In Conversation with David Niu
STREET MACADAM LIVE: In Conversation with Street Photographer David Niu
On the latest episode of @street_macadam English LIVES, I had the pleasure of hosting street photographer David Niu for a thoughtful and wide-ranging conversation about the craft, philosophy, and evolving language of street photography.
We dove into one of the genre’s most enduring debates: color vs. black and white. Is black and white inherently more “serious,” or does color better reflect the chaos and poetry of modern life? David shared how he decides which approach serves the moment — and why intention matters more than tradition.
We also explored digital vs. film, unpacking how each medium shapes not only workflow but mindset. From the discipline and anticipation required by film to the immediacy and flexibility of digital, we discussed how tools influence the photographer’s relationship to time, risk, and spontaneity.
Most importantly, we tackled the question at the heart of it all: What makes a good street photograph? Is it composition? Emotion? Timing? Tension? Story? David offered insight into what he looks for when shooting — and when editing — revealing how instinct, patience, and empathy often outweigh technical perfection.
It was an honest, nuanced conversation about seeing, waiting, and responding to the world as it unfolds. If you care about street photography — whether you shoot it or simply love it — this is one you won’t want to miss.
