ROBERT VON STERNBERG
Fine Art Photographer & Professor Emeritus
1939–Present | A distinguished American artist and educator, he has spent over six decades documenting the "offbeat" side of the American landscape. With work held in the permanent collections of over 250 institutions worldwide, his photography is defined by a formalist mastery of artificial light and a quiet, charged stillness that captures the surreal beauty of the everyday world.
Biography
His artistic journey began not with a camera, but with drawing the real and imagined details of his childhood environment. Initially earning a degree in electronics in 1961, he quickly realized a corporate career was not his path and returned to the social sciences, where he discovered a deep passion for photography. His early black-and-white work was soon published in Surfer magazine, leading to a professional staff position and a lifelong commitment to the medium.
After graduating from CSULB in 1965 and spending 14 months traveling through Europe and North Africa, his work gained rapid institutional recognition. These travels led to high-profile museum exhibitions and a significant six-page review in Art in America regarding his commissioned work for the Newport Harbor Art Museum.
Academic Leadership & Style
In 1971, he was appointed Professor in the School of the Arts at California State University, Northridge (CSUN). He taught photography as a fine art for 35 years until his retirement in 2006, when he was named Professor Emeritus.
Alongside his wife, Patricia, he is an avid traveler of the American road. His "definitive photographic images" rarely focus on iconic landmarks; instead, he explores the surreal possibilities of the American night—the glow of gas stations, red paper lanterns, and ceiling grids that resemble constellations. His work often captures scenes where human figures are distant or absent, emphasizing the visual possibilities of overlooked roadside attractions.
Global Institutional Presence
As of late 2025, his legacy is firmly established within the global art canon. Approximately 1,955 of his photographs have been acquired for the permanent collections of 258 institutions across 47 U.S. states and nine countries, including:
Museum of Modern Art, New York City
The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles
The Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris
The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
This collection is curated as a forensic sequence of 15 essential images to reflect the narrative depth and market significance of Signs, Streets & Shores. Curated by The MF Gallery from the archives of Robert von Sternberg, all works are available for acquisition.
