SAUL BROMBERGER & SANDRA HOOVER
Social Documentary Photojournalists & LGBTQ+ Historians
Collaborating since 1984 | A powerful husband-and-wife photography team, they have spent four decades documenting the resilience and intimacy of American life. From the front lines of the San Francisco Pride movement to the emotional halls of the Bailey-Boushay House, their work serves as a poignant visual record of the LGBTQ+ community’s struggle, strength, and survival.
A Collaborative Vision
The partnership began in 1984 at the Hayward Daily Review, blending two distinct perspectives: Saul, a Jewish immigrant from Israel raised in Los Angeles, and Sandra, the daughter of educators from the working-class Bay Area city of Hayward. This diversity of background fuels their "social commentary" style—a lens that seeks to capture the dignity of those often living on the margins of society.
Major Photo Essays & Social Impact
Their career is defined by long-form projects that prioritize human connection over mere observation:
PRIDE – Hearts of the Movement (1984–1990): A landmark documentation of the San Francisco Gay & Lesbian Freedom Day Parade, capturing the raw activism and intimate love of the early civil rights movement.
House of Angels (1992–1997): A deeply emotional essay documenting the residents of the Bailey-Boushay House in Seattle during the height of the AIDS epidemic. After putting this work away for 20 years due to its emotional toll, a 2015 presentation at SF Cameraworks reignited their mission to share these stories.
Portrait of the AIDS Generation: Their current work focuses on Long-Term HIV Survivors in San Francisco, highlighting the perseverance and aging challenges of a generation that redefined resilience.
Legacy and Life
Based in Alameda, in the San Francisco Bay Area, Saul and Sandra continue to pursue new stories and adventures. Their work is a staple for collectors of social documentary and LGBTQ+ history, representing a 40-year commitment to storytelling through the lens of empathy.
