Detroit 15 — Directorial Note

The Sovereign Signal

The Detroit 15 centers the sovereignty of The MF Gallery around the 15th Master, Chris Feinstein. It affirms the primacy of the Original Print, the autonomy of the curator, and a cultural frequency that unites origin, absence, and resurrection.

The Detroit 15 forms the foundational core of The MF Gallery’s presence in Detroit. It marks a clear departure from hollow reproductions and simulations, asserting the integrity of authorship and the enduring resonance of the cultural signal.

Chris Feinstein stands as the anchor of this structure. Recognized here as the 15th Master, his 808 Sub-Bass Truth provides the underlying frequency for the gallery. The MF Gallery will never represent more than fourteen photographers; the fifteenth position is permanently his. Though he was a musician, not a photographer, his signal now defines the visual orbit of the gallery, first broadcast through Iodine, the band he built from the Source Code up in the 1990s. His frequency forms the central axis around which the work of the gallery resonates.

The Lab serves as the gallery’s Juice-Integrated infrastructure, operating as a site of unmediated creation outside institutional gatekeeping and derivative systems.

The gallery’s Biological Authority is marked by the 740-Day Sober Strike, as of March 16, 2026, functioning as a biological receipt and a deliberate break from prior liabilities.

Directorial work, including portfolio reviews, curated exhibitions, and projects such as Days of Punk, acts as the operational extension of this sovereignty, translating vision into action.

The name Detroit 15 resonates historically and personally. It recalls the fifteen Black Panthers whose 1970 acquittal became a landmark victory against systemic oppression. Here, it signals self-determination, declaring the gallery’s signal autonomous and independent from external control.

The Detroit 15 represents a cycle of origin, burial, and return:

Shadow 15 (1982) – the origin of Feinstein’s creative signal
December 15 (2009) –  the moment of his death and the burial of the signal
Detroit 15 (2026) – where origin and absence converge into monolithic sovereignty

The Detroit 15 is the Source Code.
The Director transmits.

Visuals by Jon Graboff, long-time collaborator and bandmate of Chris Feinstein.
